Tipping

We're off to the USA next month on holidays(from Australia) and tipping here is not part of our culture

Can someone explain the tipping process? Is it expected? Manditory?

Who gets tipped? How much? When?

Is tipping necessary when someone just does what's expected in their job or is it for above average service?

Will try and leave a tip for any useful hints lol
